Heavy Metals Linked to Early Ovary Aging, Menopause-Related Health Issues

Women who are exposed to toxic heavy metals may have fewer eggs in their ovaries as they approach menopause – something known as diminished ovarian reserve – a new study has found. This condition is linked to serious health issues like hot flashes, bone loss, and a greater risk for heart disease.

Heavy metals are common contaminants in food and drinking water and can also be present in air pollution. They are considered to have hormone-disrupting effects with previous studies showing that they may have an impact on reproductive aging in women.

The latest study involved 549 middle-aged women who were transitioning to menopause. Evidence of heavy metals – arsenic, mercury, lead, or cadmium – in urine samples was linked to lower levels of Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a marker that gives a rough estimate of the number of eggs left in a woman's ovaries and a potential sign of health risks to come in middle age and beyond.

“Metals, including arsenic and cadmium, possess endocrine disrupting characteristics and may be potentially toxic to the ovaries,” said Sung Kyun Park, study author. “We need to study the younger population as well to fully understand the role of chemicals in diminished ovarian reserve and infertility.”

Kiwi May Be Powerful Mood Booster, Improves Mental Wellbeing

Kiwi fruit appears to be a surprisingly powerful mood booster, according to some recent research. Study participants who ate two fruits daily experienced improved mood and vitality after just 4 days with peak benefits occurring after 14 to 16 days.

Kiwis are rich in vitamin C, an essential nutrient that has been linked to an improved mood, better mental well-being, and lower depression risk. However, not much research has looked at the effects of a vitamin C supplement versus a whole food source of vitamin C – something this study sought to address.

The study involved 155 adults who had low levels of vitamin C at baseline. They were assigned to take a vitamin C supplement, placebo, or two kiwi fruit each day for 8 weeks. While the kiwi  group experienced a significantly boosted mood at just 4 days in, the vitamin C supplement only marginally improved mood up until day 12.

“It’s great for people to know that small changes in their diet, like adding kiwifruit, could make a difference in how they feel every day,” said Professor Tamlin Conner, study coauthor. Lead author Dr Ben Fletcher added: “We encourage a holistic approach to nutrition and well-being, incorporating various nutrient-rich foods into your diet.” (Also, don’t miss the ‘2-Ingredient Kiwi Sorbet’ recipe below ↓)

Younger-Looking Skin Around Your Eyes, Zero Toxin Worries

Are you frustrated with the appearance of puffiness, crow’s feet, wrinkles, dark circles, and sagging skin around your eyes?

Signs of aging often show up first on the skin that surrounds your eyes – and it takes more than just a “normal” anti-aging product to get rid of them. That’s because this area of skin is highly sensitive and delicate, needing exactly the right balance of nourishing and rejuvenating ingredients to “turn back the clock”. Unfortunately, many eye products ignore this and use synthetic, harsh, and potentially toxic ingredients that can actually harm your skin (and your health) in the long run.

Purity Woods does things differently with their USDA Certified Organic Age-Defying Eye Cream. It feeds your skin nature’s most effective AND gentle elastin-boosting, collagen-boosting, and hydrating botanicals – including many potent ingredients you rarely see elsewhere, such as babchi oil with bakuchiol (aka the “natural retinol alternative”), revolutionary maple leaf extracts, and resveratrol-rich smartweed extract. All specifically formulated for the delicate skin around your eyes with ZERO synthetic chemicals and ZERO toxin worries.

5 Healthiest Fish to Eat – And 5 to Avoid

Fish can be a great source of protein as well as brain- and heart-helping omega-3 fatty acids. Atlantic mackerel, wild-caught salmon, wild-caught sardines, and herring are all top choices as far as omega-3 content goes, while rainbow trout supplies a surprisingly high amount of vitamin B12. On the other hand, bluefin tuna and orange roughy are best avoided or limited because they often contain high amounts of mercury and other toxins, while certain types of farmed salmon are fed antibiotics. Poor Sleep Quality Can Trigger a Migraine Attack

Approximately 37 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraine attacks, which can be extremely debilitating. There are many potential triggers that can bring on a migraine – often specific to each individual – and some new research indicates that poor sleep quality may be one of them. Specifically, not sleeping well at night was linked to a 22% increased risk of a migraine attack the following morning, suggesting that extra self-care might be helpful after a bad night's sleep. Mental Health Therapy Could Help Improve IBD Symptoms

Previous research has suggested a link between irritable bowel disease (IBD) and mental health issues with 25% or more of IBD sufferers also being diagnosed with depression or anxiety. Following up on this, a new research analysis has found that improving mental health can also improve symptoms of IBD. Mental health therapy interventions were the most successful at lowering IBD-related inflammation, significantly outperforming antidepressants. (More)

“Fad” Diets Often Do More Harm Than Good

Changing your diet to incorporate more healthy foods is a good move for health but that doesn't mean all dieting is beneficial. According to a recent study, restrictive “fad” diets undertaken to lose weight quickly often do more harm than good. In fact, it's easy to get trapped in a vicious cycle of losing and regaining weight while feeling guilty about the whole process. Focusing on healthy eating behaviors rather than viewing food as something that needs to be closely monitored and controlled seems to be key for breaking the toxic diet cycle. (More)

10 Incredible Anti-Aging Skin Benefits of Bakuchiol

A newcomer to the skincare world, bakuchiol is a powerful natural extract from the babchi plant – an herb used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Some have nicknamed it a “natural retinol alternative” due to a study showing that it had similar anti-aging properties to retinol but without the irritating side effects. Some specific benefits include the potential to boost collagen, improve skin elasticity and firmness, fight acne, and fade the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots. (More)

5 Mistakes That Worsen Dark Circles & Puffy Eyes

The delicate area around your eyes takes a lot of abuse from all directions – exposure to harmful UV rays, wear and tear from facial expressions, toxins in many skincare and cosmetics products, and more.

This abuse is a key reason you may suffer with dark circles, bags, crow’s feet, and puffiness around the eyes (especially if you’re over 40). And unfortunately, many people make one or more common blunders when using eye creams, doing even more harm while trying to fix the problem – and wasting a lot of money in the process.

You can now discover the 5 common mistakes most make when it comes to choosing – and using – an eye cream in this clear and concise guide from Purity Woods. In it, you’ll discover why you should NEVER use a 1-ingredient eye cream (even vitamin C), the worst hidden skin aging accelerators that are particularly hazardous to your eye area, the single-most important thing your eye cream must contain, and more. See the 5 most common ‘eye zone’ mistakes for yourself right here.
